YOUNG TOY BREED PUPPY CARE

The small toy breeds require much more care and attention during the first few weeks after weaning than do the larger breeds of dogs. Remember that this pup has undergone quite a bit of stress during the last few days. The environment has been totally changed, as well as being taken away from its mother. The pup is now TOTALLY DEPENDENT on YOU! Imagine how YOU would feel, even today, if you were moved to a strange place, forced to eat different food, and depend on others for your total care!

The following suggestions will ease the transition for your new puppy:

1. Keep the puppy warn. Remember that it is about 10 degrees colder on the floor than at eye level because heat rises. Be sure the puppy does NOT stay DIRECTLY on a cold floor (especially concrete), or near a draft. I highly recommend the use of airline shipping crates for the bed and to aid in house training.

2. Feed four to six times each day. I suggest starting with premium high quality pet foods, such as Hills Healthy Blend Puppy food and wet with warm water. Feed the puppy all it will eat in 15 minutes and then take the food away. Do not leave food out all the time. Decrease feeding to 3-4 times daily when the puppy is 8-10 weeks of age, providing it is eating well. Do NOT feed TABLESCRAPS or MILK, unless they are mixed with the regular food. It is also advisable to feed a small amount of high quality canned food such as SCIENCE DIET three times each day if the puppy is a finicky eater.

3. Keep the pup ISOLATED from other dogs as much as possible. A mild infection in an older dog can spell DISASTER for this young pup. It takes time for the pup's body to build immunity against the severe diseases, such as Distemper and Parvovirus. The immunization series MUST BE COMPLETED before the pup is immune to these dreaded diseases.

4. Caution young children about hurting the pup. Broken bones in these small breeds are a nightmare for veterinarians to repair.

5. Bathe the puppy as needed in Mycodex Sensicare Shampoo. Other products often irritate the skin and dry the hair coat. Be certain to THOROUGHLY DRY the pup with a blow dryer to prevent chilling. A bath every 7-10 days should be adequate. Ask for recommendations on flea control many products are toxic to these small puppies.

6. Feed NUTRICAL according to our directions to prevent hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can develop in these puppies, especially if they do not eat well. This condition can result in seizures.

7. NOTIFY the CLINIC if your puppy should not eat for 24 hours, vomit, develop diarrhea, or appear sick In any way. Even though your puppy appears healthy to us today, remember that it takes time for clinical signs of illness to develop after exposure to disease. We have no way of knowing what the puppy may have been exposed to during the past 2-3 weeks.

8. CALL US FOR ADVICE ANYTIME you think a problem might be developing. WE CARE!

9. RETURN In 3 weeks for the next immunizations.
